Best Short Screenplay

When a seasoned criminal gets a chance at freedom, he must reconnect with his daughter — before their fragile bond is broken.

Part of Me

Best International Short Film

“Part of Me” is a visual exploration of the inner world of a person suspended between inertia and the urge to act.
The protagonist lives within the realm of her own dreams and memories, seeking to reconnect with nature and with herself.

Her journey unfolds through symbolic elements – earth, air, and water. Stilt-walkers embody the earth, aerial acrobats the air, and synchronized swimmers the water. Through them, she seeks liberation and understanding, searching for the boundary between humanity and nature.

Her song becomes a unique language – a voice expressing inner pain and the longing to reclaim a lost connection. In response, mysterious beings appear, embodying the very forces of nature.

The film is a meditative tale about the attempt to listen – to nature, and to oneself; about the pursuit of balance and meaning in a world where the boundaries between reality and imagination gradually dissolve.

AFTERSHOCK

In London, Charlie — a 24-year-old American — meets Archie, a brooding, magnetic Brit whose charm feels like the antidote to everything she’s running from. Their summer romance burns fast and bright, but beneath the intoxication lies Archie’s struggle with addiction — a darkness Charlie can’t see until it’s already wrapped around them both.

When their relationship is tested by distance, Charlie experiences a sexual assault that fractures her already fragile sense of self. Told through fractured memories and aching silences, Aftershock traces the fault lines of love, trauma, and dependency as past and present bleed into one another.

The Stork

Best International Short Film

The Stork is a character driven comedy that follows well intentioned, but clueless, parents of a queer woman wanting to start a family via artificial insemination using Norwegian semen ordered online – a popular method for queer couples.

However, typically, the receipts of said semen tend to sign for their important delivery but on this occasion they’re not in but, (un)luckily, one set of parents are! On delivery, there is a slight altercation that results in the sample being destroyed leaving the delivery driver and parents in a bit of sticky (or rather NOT sticky) situation that needs to be rectified before their daughter returns home. All three characters are on very different pages regarding their plan of action and have very different perspectives when it comes to understanding the queer community – supportive but not necessarily accurate. Through miscommunication and audience the short pushes moral boundaries, questioning how far would a parent go to secure their child’s happiness. We follow the trio as they stumble their way through learning about their daughter’s journey (despite their ignorance) and its complexities – from a place of love. It’s an uplifting, family centred story showcasing the importance of unconditional love of queer people.

En Avant L’Etoile du Nord ou La joie de “vie”

Best Documentary Short Film

Is French Heritage in Minnesota still alive?
“En Avant l’Etoile du Nord ou La Joie de “vie” is the first of a two fold film (documentary). The first one is about the identity of the people of Minnesota, their feelings about their French ancestors and whether they relate to their ancestry or not.

It has been difficult to capture an emotion, to emphasize it and express it in a convincing way but immensely rewarding, nevertheless. These deep feelings are captured through the camera operator’s eye, myself at times, up close or on a tripod from a distance. You will notice when the image becomes a little unstable or unclear. This has a purpose, that of capturing a heart full of emotion, a personal link between the artist and the subject. It is the link between real life and the mechanics of filming and is crucial to my vision, my unique personal touch.
The second one, coming out later, will relate to the places in the New France area where one can still find French places, French remains of French culture, architecture, agriculture…. still alive.

Directed and choreographed by Costa Rican-based artist Maui Barzuna, the short dance film Woulda Coulda Shoulda explores the search for self-esteem by trying to live up to an idealized image of yourself to compensate feelings of insecurity, self-doubt & anxiety.

This cycle often produce a sense of impending failure that inspires frenzied hard-work and short-lived gratification when failure is delayed. Mr. Munro

Best Experimental Short

Mr. Munro is a short film inspired by the photographic work of David Picard and Andrew Ly…

It is a visual poem that follows a mysterious character dressed as if the swamp is his world, wearing garments and carrying a demeanour evocative of an uncanny mix of Patrick Bateman and Edward Scissorhands. Mr. Munro speaks in verses, describing his journey from inner darkness to inner light. ChatGPT provided the poem, which was then edited by Juliette Garcia León for human touch and relatability. This structure of writing made way for creating a storyline that feels uncanny-canny.
